RELIGION and the ENLIGHTENMENT!!!!?

The basic idea of the Enlightenment was that just as there were natural laws that governed the natural world, there were natural rights. That meant that men derived their rights from God, not from their governments. It challenged the idea of the divine right of kings or the right of a government to impose a particular denomination as a state religion. Strongly influenced by the enlightenment, Jefferson wrote in the Declaration of Independence that government derives its power from the consent of the governed. This was a huge change from the traditional European idea that governments granted rights and power to the people.
