Suede couch help plz!?

okay, so i bought this suede couch at the thrift store yesterday, and i dont know if its real suede, or micro suede or any kind of suede. can anyone tell me how i can tell, my husbands says it real suede. but thats not my question, the couch smells a little funny to my like the smell of tobacco? i dont really know if it smells like that because my husband says its fine after we kept spraying it with febreeze and cleaning it with laundry oxyclean spray.but whatever it is its giving me a head acne. im not looking to get any stains out but that info would be great of anyone knows but im looking to see if there is a way to wash the couch, like steaming it or get a shampooing machine? any information, ive tried looking for ways to clean it but i found out that its not safe to put water in it? plz help? thank you!!
